Today, Fitchburg State University's Upward Bound  Math and Science Summer Program students took part in community service as part of their Day of Service. This group was located at Fitchburg's iconic Monument Park, as well as the nearby Fitchburg Senior Center. Other groups performed their service at Fitchburg Rail Trail, Leominster Senior Center, and the Leominster Rail Trail. It won't be all work, the service will be followed by a a lunch and  fun activities afterward.

It's been a busy two days, so far, for our Young Falcons Academy week, where students from Fitchburg and Leominster public middle schools partake in a week full of activities on campus. Yesterday and today, the Young Falcons met with current students to find out what college life was really like, make shadow puppets in Conlon Fine Arts with Professors Sally Moore and Andrea Olmstead, learn about therapy dogs meeting a Fitchburg State favorite Daisy the Therapy Dog, just to name a few. 

This afternoon, to wrap up our Young Falcons Academy week, where students from Fitchburg and Leominster public middle schools partake in a week full of activities on campus, the Young Falcons wrote Thank You notes, and scripts, which they recorded as part of a video production, Afterward, they got to release some energy in our Game Room.

Phi Sigma Sigma sold flowers in G-Lobby of Hammond Hall for those last minute sweethearts, an yesterday, The Office of Student Development held their annual Valentine's Luncheon as a fundraiser for Alternative Spring Break (ASB), a long-standing tradition of traveling on spring break to assist Habitat for Humanity with the construction of houses for people in need.

Students volunteering for this semester's Alternative Spring Break (ASB) sold candygrams in Hammond Hall yesterday to fund their trip. The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program at Fitchburg State University was honored and recognized by Comcast yesterday for their participation, commitment and accomplishments at the Jurassic World: Rule Your Future STEAM Initiative, that they attended in Los Angeles, CA in June, 2022.  The event was sponsored by Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and Comcast/NBC Universal Studios, to focus on strengthening STEAM preparation and skills among low-income, first-generation students. 

Fitchburg State University's Upward Bound Summer Program students work on thank you notes to send in gratitude to their area internships. Upward Bound provides academic support through tutoring services, educational and college preparatory workshops, and cultural field trips stressing academic development, The program serves high school students from Fitchburg and Leominster for the duration of their high school career and beyond. The 6-week summer residential program gives students an opportunity to live on the Fitchburg State University campus and experience life as a college student. Students attend academic classes in the morning, participate in community service worksites in the afternoon, are engaged in a variety of entertaining workshops in the evening and have the option of attending college visits and cultural trips on the weekend.

The Fitchburg State University Center for Professional Studies' Advanced Placement Summer Institutes (APSI) first week is in full swing. The APSI are designed to support all aspects of AP courses, including AP methodology, curriculum, class assignments and examinations as well as providing strategies for teaching AP courses. Here, Biology Educators run through some AP experiments to bring to their own classrooms. 

Yesterday afternoon saw the launch of the Michael Vincent Addorisio Collection, a new exhibit and online collection celebrating the life and legacy of a fallen World War II sailor from Fitchburg. The Michael Vincent Addorisio (Addorizzi) Family Collection, including 93 letters, postcards, and medals, depicting a military life that was tragically cut short while serving on the USS Reid during World War II. The collection is curated by the fallen sailor’s niece, Rose Anne Addorisio, and is preserved in the library archives through a collaboration with the university’s Center for Italian Culture (CIC). Ms. Addorisio is a member of the CIC’s board.
