Last week, students enrolled in the Fitchburg High School Honors Academy visited campus to learn about the Fitchburg State University Honors Program from Honors Coordinator Mathematics Professor Dr. Catherine Buell, and Assistant Honors Coordinator Biology and Chemistry Professor Dr. Emma Downs, and students currently enrolled in the program. After the information and Q&A session, students took tours of the campus and enjoyed lunch in the dining commons.

Yesterday, Lourdes Ramirez, coordinator of field placements, partnerships and recruitment for Fitchburg State’s School of Education welcomed a cohort of local high school students enrolled in The Future Educator Academy program to campus for a day of programming. Students completed a badge focused on Supporting Mental Wellness in the Classroom, Working with Students Who are Underserved, Traditionally Marginalized, and Disenfranchised, and a badge on performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to adults and infants.

Fitchburg State University's Admissions and Early College and Dual Enrollment hosted English Language Learners (ELL) students from Fitchburg High School and Leominster High School for a morning information session. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Patricia Marshall opened this, the second year the university has held this event, where she invited ELL students to a current student Q & A panel, campus tour, and admissions info session - all with live translation. Lunch in the dining commons followed, in order help the students envision themselves as a future college student, and let them know they are valued at Fitchburg State and their diverse linguistic skills and backgrounds are an asset that are community appreciates.

Today, Fitchburg State University's Upward Bound Math and Science Summer Program students took a trip to Grove Pond in Ayer, MA to lend a hand to PACE (People of Ayer Concerned about the Environment) with their Water Chestnut Pull at Grove Pond. This annual program enlists the public's help to pull out invasive water chestnuts from the pond as well as the Nashua River Watershed.

The campus welcomed representatives from colleges and universities across Massachusetts on today for the the Veterans Certifying Official Conference sponsored by the state Department of Higher Education. Certifying officials on campuses help student veterans get the GI Bill benefits to which they are entitled. President Lapidus greeted the conference attendees, who took part in sessions on topics related to supporting student veterans on campus and helping them complete their academic goals.
