Yesterday afternoon at the Hammond Hall Art Gallery, local artist Romayne Dawnay discussed her artistic process at the opening of her show “Cosmic (Im)Modesty.” The exhibition is the first art exhibition of the academic year.

Humanities professor Joshua Field works with students in his Drawing class in the Conlon Fine Arts building. This studio course introduces students to the practice of drawing with emphasis on the description of form through means of line, shade, and perspective.   Students, their families, faculty and staff gathered in Hammond Gallery.  last week for the opening reception of ARTeries. ARTeries is Fitchburg State University Fine Art Department’s  annual juried exhibition that showcases the strongest original student work in drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media art. ARTeries provides an opportunity for the university community to celebrate the artistic talents of Fitchburg State students.   Student works will be on display until April 17, 2026. The Hammond Gallery is ready for the opening of ARTeries  March 16 - April 16, 2026.  ARTeries  is Fitchburg State University's Fine Art Department’s annual juried exhibition that showcases the strongest original student work in drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media art. An Opening Reception will be held at the gallery March 19, 2026 at 3:30 p.m.

Students in Intro to Studio Art class learned about the  color theory, a practical combination of art and science, utilizing the color wheel in the Conlon Fine Arts building. This course provides a hands-on introduction to drawing, painting, and sculpture. The course emphasizes the fundamentals of each studio discipline, and will also explore the expressive potential of visual art: how the various elements of drawing, painting, and sculpture can be used to embody very different feelings and ideas. Students in Andrea Olmstead's Ceramics class worked on pinch pot vessels during this morning's ceramics class in Conlon Fine Arts. . A pinch pot is a simple form of hand-made pottery produced from ancient times to the present, a great starting point for the beginning of the semester. Learn more about our Fine Art Program here.

A gallery reception to open the Faculty Show was held yesterday afternoon at the Hammond Hall Art Gallery. This exhibit features a wide range of original and innovative work that includes sculpture, painting, photography, and video art created by faculty in the Humanities and Communications Media Departments. Artists include Jessica Robey, Jeff Warmouth, Andrea Olmstead, Deborah Santero, Britt Snyder, Don Tarallo, and J Flynn.

Earlier this week, the Humanities Department and the Dean of Arts and Sciences sponsored the third and final open figure drawing session offered this fall. This was an open figure drawing session with no instruction. Newsprint, vine charcoal, and basic supplies were available and no experience required.

Students in Humanities Professor Sarah Bromberg's Drawing class work on their grid drawing projects. The grid method is a drawing technique that involves overlaying a grid on a reference image and a blank surface, then drawing one section of the image at a time by copying the contents of each corresponding square.
