Students enrolled in the Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC) had their third monthly meeting of the semester yesterday afternoon in Weston Auditorium. After an address by Academy Instructor, and Sterling, MA Police Officer, Steve Mucci, Police Program Academy Director Lisa Lane introduced guest speaker  Lt. John  Czasnowski  of the Gardener, MA Police Department. Lt.  Czasnowski discussed the Handle with Care North Central / North Quabbin (HWC NC/NQ) Initiative with the students.

This afternoon, the Fitchburg State University Career Services and Advising Center sponsored a Law Enforcement Career Fair, open to anyone interested in careers in law enforcement and policing. First-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, especially those in our Criminal Justice program, were strongly encouraged to attend and take this opportunity to connect with employers looking  to hire Fitchburg State students. Fitchburg State University welcomed a delegation from the nation of Moldova to campus this week to demonstrate its groundbreaking police program, whose graduates complete two academic degrees and full municipal police academy training in the span of five years.

University President Richard S. Lapidus, Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest F. Martineau and Fitchburg State Academy Director Lisa Lane McCarty outlined the program for the delegation, including police and education leaders from the Eastern European nation.

Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest J. Martineau addressed students enrolled in the Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC) at yesterday afternoon's monthly meeting - the first of the spring semester. After saluting their commitment to joining a vital profession, he offered them a chance to make some money along the way.

Towards the end of the semester, students in Professor Michael S. McCutcheon's Criminal Investigation course  put to use what they learned in the classroom earlier this semester to test as they sought to lift fingerprints from glass, wet surfaces, and soft surfaces.  

Students enrolled in the Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC) had their last monthly meeting of the semester yesterday afternoon in Weston Auditorium. At this meeting, the Drill Instructor (DI) had a "hats off" conversation with the students. When a DI has a “Hats off” conversation with a group, it’s a signal to the group that it will be an open discussion, it’s a time to teach/mentor/coach and a time for the group to relax just a bit. When the hat goes back on, it’s a signal that the DI is back in the traditional DI role.

Yesterday afternoon, Criminal Justice Professor Katherine Hazen, presented 5 Study Tips from Cognitive Science with students in Percival Hall. The thrust of the presentation was to give students the tools they need, based on cognitive science, that will help them study for their upcoming finals.

Today, students in Professor Michael S. McCutcheon's Criminal Investigation course got to try their hands at making a moulage - a mold of a footprint used in criminal investigation. After leaving their own footprints in the ground outside of the McKay Campus School, the students made a mix of dental stone & water and filled their  prints. Once dry, they will clean them off and use to find specific landmarks unique to their print. This course enables students to understand the fundamentals of the criminal investigation process. This morning, Assistant Professor Eileen Kirk and Assistant Professor Lilian Bobea hosted three Boston Municipal Court judges at a guest lecture on criminal justice in room 133 of the Antonucci Science Center. Associate Justice David J. Breen, Associate Justice Lisa Ann Grant and Associate Justice Myong J. Joun (who was recently nominated to the federal bench by the Biden Administration) discussed their wide-ranging criminal justice experiences including civil rights cases, their work in the district attorney's office and in public defense.
