This morning, Fitchburg State University Mathematics Department  hosted its 43rd Elizabeth Haskins Mathematics Contest, welcoming 170 students from nine regional high schools. The annual event is named  for Elizabeth Haskins, a Fitchburg State mathematics professor who retired in 1978 and passed away in 2004.

James Irons, a recovering alcoholic, is in the hospital a.k.a. the simulation lab, being prepared for a surgical procedure.  This team of our nursing students were directed to administer medications, prepare the patient for some post-op procedures, give a blood transfusion, and work through the simulation in real time. The Fitchburg State University Nursing Simulation Laboratory assists nursing students in learning critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in preparation for their healthcare careers. The “manikins” act as lifelike patient simulators, wherein instructors provide real-time feedback via a control center, giving students as close to a hospital scenario as possible. Fellow students watch as their classmates work through the simulation. All students and faculty debrief after the scenario.

Students in Theater Professor Mary Vreeland's  Acting for the Camera course, An intensive scene study course for the advanced student actor, spent their class time recording short commercial scripts for the camera. The scene was reviewed and Professor Vreeland and the rest of the class gave immediate feedback. 

Due to a late season nor'easter, Alpha Sigma Tau are holding their yearly Swing-a-Thon fundraiser in G-Lobby of the Hammond Building, they have been swinging since 8 a.m. this morning, and will continue until 8 p.m. tomorrow night for a total of 36 hours. They are swinging to raise money for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network  (RAINN). RAINN helps people who experienced sexual assault get the help they need to support them and give them a voice. Stop by and  join them on the quad. Fitchburg State University Athletics Head Strength & Conditioning Coach David Jenkerson Jr. ran members of the Fitchburg State Football Team and Fitchburg State Cross Country Team through a warm up & workouts this morning at the Carmelita Landry Fitness Center. 

Students in Engineering Technology Professor Wayne Whitfield's Engineering Design & Fabrication I course run through various pieces of equipment so they are prepared to instruct others on how to use each one. This course studies mass production theory, systems and procedures in metalworking which includes engineering design and leads to prototype development.

Students in Professor Kevin McCarthy's Sound Design course, using an arsenal of props, add sounds to a movie clip. Foley artists devise and record the everyday sounds heard in films, television shows, and video games—noises like footsteps, a sword being drawn from a sheath, the swishing of clothing, or punches being thrown, etc. This course examines the elements of post-production sound design within the context of film and video production. This course blends the artistic and the technical. Students  use nonlinear editors, digital audio work stations and analog and digital recording equipment to design soundtracks for their film and video productions.

The Visionaries in Engineering and Technology Speaker Series will welcome Irmgard Buder, PhD., professor for renewable energy and electro mobility and head of the
 degree program in environment and energy at the University of Applied Sciences Rhine-Waal in Kleve, Germany. Dr. Buder will discussed what options exist for energy storage, latest developments, as well as bottlenecks.

Music Program Professor Dr. Jonathan Harvey  welcomed the audience in the Kent Recital Hall to Women in the Arts, a continuation of our Women's History Month celebration.
