This morning, Somerville Police Department Detective Mario Oliveira (Ret.) shared his poignant story with the 5th Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC). On November 2, 2010, while assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives Boston Field office as a Task Force Agent, Detective, Detective Oliveira was shot six times at point blank range while serving a Federal arrest warrant.
Detective Oliveira told of his time in the Mass General Hospital Emergency Trauma Bay, where he had an amazing experience with the afterlife. He shared that he was visited by his late Grandmother in the form of a nurse. Detective Oliveira’s grandmother provided him with Hope & Faith that he would pull through despite dying three times that evening.

This morning, President Lapidus, along with Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Patricia Marshall, and Interim Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Franca Barricelli welcomed our newest cohort of International students at their orientation in the Falcon Hub.
The Fitchburg State University Great Move In 2022 was capped off with the Falcon Nest BBQ. The new arrivals got to take part in an array of activities, and had one more chance to spend time with family before they left them in their new home.

The Fitchburg State University Athletics Women's Volleyball Team is back on campus and held an early morning practice at the volleyball court near the Conlon Fine Arts Center. After choosing teams, and a "high stakes" round of Rock, Paper Scissors to see who served, the team played rounds in the morning sun.

Chief of University Police Michael Cloutier invited our Residents Assistants, and Housing and Residential Services staff, to tour University Police facilities. Along with lunch and meeting the University Police staff, students and staff got to try out equipment, see what it's like to perform a sobriety test with "drunk" goggles, meet Odin, our therapy dog, and so much more!

Today, Sgt. Justin Starkus of the Auburn MA Police Department instructed the 5th Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC) how to administer a breathalyzer exam after an OUI stop. After extensive instructions and quizzing, the recruits were tasked with successfully completing all the steps legally necessary to perform the breathalyzer test. Sgt. Starkus reviewed the completed tests for procedural accuracy.
