Undergraduate Research - Board of Trustees

At last week's  Board of Trustees meeting in the Hammond Hall Main Lounge Fitchburg State University Mathematics Department  Professors Peter Staab  and Fernando Diaz Morera, along with students Charlie Stevenson and Rohanji (Anji) Novas, presented their research from the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C. Charlie is a veteran, a father, and an IT professional who came back to school and found his path in mathematics. He graduates this May and is now looking at PhD programs. Anji is a first-generation student from the Dominican Republic studying computer science and math. She’s already thinking about her next national conference. These lunch sessions give our Board of Trustees a chance to see the amazing scholarly work of our students.

45th Annual Elizabeth Haskins High School Mathematics Contest

  Late last week, Fitchburg State University Mathematics Department  hosted its 45th Elizabeth Haskins Mathematics Contest, welcoming 150 students from nine regional high schools. The annual event is named  for Elizabeth Haskins, a Fitchburg State mathematics professor who retired in 1978 and passed away in 2004.

Alumni Panel: What is the professional value of a Mathematics degree?

The Fitchburg State University Mathematics Department hosted an Alumni Career Panel to answer the question; What is the professional value of a Mathematics degree? Panelists represent a wide range of industries, including quantitative finance, education, and software engineering. This was a unique opportunity for current students to learn how to market your analytical skills to recruiters, discover non-traditional career paths for math minors/majors, and network with professionals who once sat in their same seats.

Around Campus - Warm October Day = Class Outside

When you have an unseasonably warm October day in North Central Massachusetts, you don't let it go to waste, which is likely why Mathematics Professor Nermin Bayazit recently held her Informal Math Modeling class outside on the Alumni Plaza. The course covers relations, patterns and functions using multiple representations and focusing on the manner in which these concepts connect to mathematical ideas specified in the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks.

Students compete in College Fed Challenge

Fitchburg State University this year joined the College Fed Challenge, a national competition wherein teams of undergraduate students from across the country analyze economic and financial conditions and develop monetary policy recommendations. Their proposals are then offered in formal presentations to teams of judges.
