Yesterday afternoon, in the Miller Oval, The Point student journalists and their supporters joined together for the ninth annual Student Press Freedom Day, a national moment to stand up for press freedom and recognize the essential role student journalists play in their communities.
This year’s Student Press Freedom Day theme, Resilience in Action, celebrates the ways that student journalists pivot, push forward and raise their voices — even as censorship, intimidation and legal threats escalate.
The event hosted four speakers; Danielle Ray, News Reporter - Sentinel & Enterprise, Fitchburg State University Student Journalist & Student Government Association President Michael Burns, Nick Mallard Sports Reporter - Sentinel & Enterprise, and Freelance Journalist & Fitchburg Councilor-at-Large Sally Cragin.
The Point, the Fitchburg State campus newspaper, is produced by and for the students. It is housed in the English Studies department and is edited by students in the College Newspaper Production course, where they receive formal training in the copyediting, photojournalism, opinion writing, newsroom management, online production, and social media promotion.
