Taking advantage during spring break, upgrades are being made in the Antonucci Science Complex thanks to a grant worth nearly $750,000 from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) for enhancing the biology and chemistry laboratories here at Fitchburg State University, creating new research and learning opportunities for students and faculty members. Biology and Chemistry Professor Dennis Awasabisah observes, and lends a hand when needed, while MBRAUN Technician Craig installs the new glovebox workstation.

Nursing students at Fitchburg State University will benefit from cutting edge technology and next-level simulations thanks to generous grants from the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Charitable Foundation and the George I. Alden Trust.

The grants will fund wearable technology to let students and instructors utilize the latest augmented reality software as well as stipends for nursing and game design students to create and deploy new scenarios for nurses in training.

“This really is cutting edge,” said Associate Professor Deborah Benes, chair of Fitchburg State’s Nursing Department. “We’re giving our students the opportunity to work with equipment they never would have seen before that’s being used in the workforce right now.”

As part of our Center for Diversity and Inclusiveness'  Women's History Month celebration the campus was urged to wear purple and commemorate international women’s day, and invited to stop by G-Lobby to learn a little, win a little, and grab a snack.

Recreation Services gave students the chance to test their NFL Combine abilities against top college athletes at the Rec Gymnasium. Events included 40 Yard Dash, Vertical Jump, 20 Yard Shuffle, and more.

Students in Film and Video Professor Robert Harris' Film Styles Genres & Movements class were in the studio setting up for an interview with Alum Buffy Cautela ‘22 for a segment for Film School Confidential: Stories of Fitchburg State Communications Department Past & Present. The thrust of the project is to produce a compendium of short stories of the students, faculty, alumni of the university's Communications Media Program. Learn about our Film & Video Program here. 

Music Professor Justin Casinghino works with students on their projects in his Intro to Music Technology course. This course focuses on acoustics, hardware operation, music theory, notation, and composition skills through instructional software and on creating, recording, and editing sounds with digital audio applications. Yesterday, our Veteran Center held a Meet & Greet for our veteran students to gather for coffee & camaraderie, Fittingly this took place during  National Invest in Veterans Week which is all about extending a helping hand to those who've served, ensuring a smooth transition to civilian life with care and respect.

Students enrolled in the Fitchburg State University Police Program's Recruit Officer Course (ROC) had their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon at our Recreation Center. Lead Physical Training (PT) instructor Eric Bailey, along with PT instructors Dr. Jess Alsup and Dr. Lindsay Parisi of our Exercise Sports Science Program (EXSS) introduced the class to the importance of PT, and ran members of the 7th ROC through some PT exercises.

Yesterday afternoon, Provost Patricia Marshall welcomed those gathered in the President's Hall for Professor Teresa Fava Thomas'  presentation of  the Harrod Lecture "The Forever Shutdown: The Hamilton Woolen Strike of 1934." After an introduction by Paul Weizer, Chair of the Economics, History and Political Science Professor Fava Thomas discussed the history of the mill as well as the United Textile Workers' launch of a nation-wide strike.

English Studies Professor Katharine Covino's Literature for Young Adults course students, who read Fitchburg State University alumni Robert Cormier’s canonical novel The Chocolate War. and who dug deeper into the story by working collaboratively with their classmates in the Robert E. Cormier Archive gave their final presentations in Thompson Hall.
