Students in Communications Media Professor Robert Harris' Intro to Film and Video class learn the process of manually editing 16mm film. Intro to Film & Video is the introductory course in the Film & Video sequence where students are exposed to the basics of production and post-production for both digital and photochemical media. Topics include understanding and using visual language, camera operation, understanding the film and video production process, basic editing, production crew structure and interpersonal communication. Students in Biology and Chemistry Professor Ronald Krieser's genetics lab conduct a gel electrophoresis experiment in the Antonucci Science Complex. Gel electrophoresis, a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA, or protein fragments based on their size and electrical charge. It involves applying an electric field to a gel matrix, causing the negatively charged nucleic acids to migrate. Smaller fragments move faster through the gel, leading to their separation and analysis, often visualized using a fluorescent dye.

Students in Humanities Professor Sarah Bromberg's Drawing class work on their grid drawing projects. The grid method is a drawing technique that involves overlaying a grid on a reference image and a blank surface, then drawing one section of the image at a time by copying the contents of each corresponding square. Yesterday, our Engineering Technology Department hosted a group of students and two teachers from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School's (Monty Tech) Engineering Program, who spent the day exploring opportunities in Engineering Technology at Fitchburg State University. After welcoming remarks from Department Chair Nirajan Mani, faculty and students, the high school students worked with current students on an eco-centric project in Professor Ana Mesquita-Emlinger's Building Design I course. More presentation s and tours of our facilities were followed by lunch in our dining hall and campus tours by our Admissions Tour Guides.

Students in Biology and Chemistry Professor Mathangi Krishnamurthy's Organic Chemistry Lab make nylon in the Antonucci Science Complex. This course covers topics such as structure, functional groups, stereochemistry, nomenclature and reactions of organic compounds. Reactions of carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acids and their derivatives are covered in detail including nucleophilic addition, condensation and nucleophilic substitution with special emphasis on reaction mechanisms and stereochemical outcomes.

Students in Professor Jeff Warmouth's Game Design Workshop conduct the first trial of the games they are working on for the class. In this course, students learn to design and develop games using an industry-standard game engine. Students build foundational knowledge in the C# scripting language to implement mechanics with game objects & components, including input, movement, physics, collision, instantiation/destruction, and scoring.
