Around Campus - Precalculus

Mathematics Professor Ben Levy reviews problems with students in his Precalculus class. The course prepares students for the study of calculus. Topics covered include real numbers, equations and inequalities and analytic geometry, as well as polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions.

CTL Presents: Active Learning Classroom Show and Tell

In our perpetual effort to provide a better, more accessible education, our Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) sponsored a Show & Tell in one of our Active Learning Classrooms in the newly renovated portion of Thompson Hall yesterday afternoon. An Active Learning Classroom is designed to invite flexible teaching and experimentation in pedagogy, configured to maximize active, collaborative learning and multimodal teaching, in contrast with traditional lecture-style classrooms. Drs. Jannette McMenamy, J.J. Silvia, Elise Takehana, Kisha Tracy present how they are currently utilizing the Active Learning Classrooms.

Careers in Law Enforcement Fair

First-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, especially those in our Criminal Justice program, were strongly encouraged to attend and take this opportunity to connect with employers looking  to hire Fitchburg State students. Around Campus - Intro to Environmental Science

Environmental and Earth Science Professor Christopher Picone discussed forms of energy in his Intro to Environmental Science class. Students were shown the rooftop photovoltaic solar panels (PVs) installed here at Fitchburg State University in 2011. Later, a demonstration of how a turbine does was interlaced with a lesson in wind power. The goal of Introduction to Environmental Science is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to understand interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.

Acting for the Camera - Selling the Product

Students in Theater Professor Mary Vreeland's  Acting for the Camera course, An intensive scene study course for the advanced student actor, spent their class time recording short commercial scripts, each trying to convince the viewer to purchase a self-care product.  The scene was reviewed and Professor Vreeland and the rest of the class gave immediate feedback.

Women's History Month - Spring Break Book Club

Earlier this week, as part of Women's History Month, members of the Fitchburg State University community gathered to discuss the four most remembered and acclaimed of Maya Angelou's poems "Phenomenal Women", "Still I Rise", "Weekend Glory", and "Our Grandmothers". These poems celebrate women with a majesty that has inspired and touched the hearts of millions.

Police Program Draws International Attention

Fitchburg State University welcomed a delegation from the nation of Moldova to campus this week to demonstrate its groundbreaking police program, whose graduates complete two academic degrees and full municipal police academy training in the span of five years.

University President Richard S. Lapidus, Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest F. Martineau and Fitchburg State Academy Director Lisa Lane McCarty outlined the program for the delegation, including police and education leaders from the Eastern European nation.

that showcases the strongest original student work in drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media art. The Center for Italian Culture - Showing of Stracci

The Center for Italian Culture at Fitchburg State University continued its series on the “Made in Italy” brand this month this afternoon with a screening of the documentary film Stracci in Ellis White Lecture Hall in Hammond Hall. The documentary discusses the sustainability of fashion by looking at it through the eyes of those who have always recycled used clothes and transformed them into raw materials. A journey that starts from Prato, the world capital of recycled wool, and goes around the world, to discover the impact on the planet of the excessive consumption to which the world of fashion has educated us.
