Last week, as part of the United Way Day of Caring Danette Day and her students and volunteered to paint the flower boxes that run alongside North Street. These students are enrolled in her First Year Experience (FYE) class called How to Build Community and Why it Matters. The flower boxes are owned and managed by members of Rotary East Fitchburg. As one of their fundraising efforts every year rotary club members plant flowers, water and weed them throughout the summer. Local businesses support the fundraiser by donating money to advertise their businesses on the boxes. Funds raised are used to support students through scholarships, development of local playgrounds, summer camps opportunities etc.
For the past 6 years Dr. Day has volunteered for this event. However, this year she became a member of the Rotary East Fitchburg and after a presentation by Beth Hodge, Associate Director of Resource Development for the United Way, the vice president, Robert Campbell and she discussed this idea of organizing a project to paint the flower boxes, which fits perfectly with her FYE course and many of her students decided they would participate.
