Around Campus - Font Design

Students in Communications Media Graphic Design  Professor Donald Tarallo's Font Design course took a break from their screens and went full throwback—stepping into the digital offline world to bring letters to life using 15th-century printing techniques.

In this course students design an uppercase sans serif font. Students will learn traditional letterform proportions, foundation concepts in font design, and the unique aspects of letterform design for optimal screen-reading. The final font will be presented in a poster design that explains the background research and design rationale. Lectures on the history of typography and experimental typography will augment the course. Student can repeat this course one time for credit and in doing so will complete a lowercase version of the font.
