Students in Humanities Professor Sarah Bromberg's Drawing class work on their grid drawing projects. The grid method is a drawing technique that involves overlaying a grid on a reference image and a blank surface, then drawing one section of the image at a time by copying the contents of each corresponding square. Yesterday afternoon, the Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library hosted an opening reception for local artist Ricardo Barros whose work is  featured in the  exhibition “Off the Hill: Portraits from within the Fitchburg Community.” Barros is a photographer, writer, curator, and filmmaker. His works are in the permanent collections of eleven museums, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Museum of Art of São Paulo, and the Fitchburg Art Museum. Ricardo was awarded a Fellowship in Photography by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 1984 and 2021, and the Marlene and David Persky Present Tense Prize by ArtsWorcester in 2024. He recently moved to Fitchburg with his wife, artist Heather Barros. The Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library is in Hammond Hall, located at 160 Pearl St. where the exhibit will run through March 31 in the library.

Theater Professor Kelly Morgan enlisted the help of the  Drawbridge Puppet Theater in conjunction with the The Humanities and Education Departments to transform the Ellis White lecture Hall for a performance of Pinocchio. Professor Morgan's classes, Professor Joann Nichols' Arts Integration class as well as three classes from our McKay Campus Elementary School attended. 

On Wednesday, Nov. 12 @ 7pm, the Communications Media Department will begin the run of  its Fall theatrical production of  the timely romantic drama, “Stop Kiss” by Diana Son at theTheater for the Performing Arts in the McKay Complex at 67 Rindge Road. Admission is FREE and open to the public. “Stop Kiss” is set in New York City in 1998. Callie is a traffic reporter who has grown tired of New York City. Sara is a fresh face from St. Louis, hoping to make a difference as a school teacher in the Bronx. Both women have boyfriends, but as their friendship develops into something more, they begin to question what they really want in life. Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in surprising ways. Read more about the production here.

After some warm up exercises, students in Theater Professor Kelly Morgan's Voice II class recite an excerpt in a dialect of their choice and are given feedback. This course expands the fundamentals of Voice I that included breath, diction, relaxation, articulation and resonance. This involves work on verse and lyric vocal education with works of Shakespeare, Restoration, Moliere and The Greeks. Techniques gained from these classical structures are applied to various forms of character voice work, dialect and commercial voice-over techniques.

Students in Andrea Olmstead's Ceramics continue working on vessels  using the coil method of pottery. Coil pottery is a method of handbuilding pottery where a potter forms a base, walls, and style by combining clay coils (or cylinders). The potter rolls the clay into coils, stacks the coils together, and joins the coils through pressure creating a vessel. Learn more about our Fine Art Program here.

Fitchburg State University’s instrumental and choral ensembles performed a joint concert last evening in Weston Auditorium. The concert program served as  a showcase of “bite-sized” performances by the Community Orchestra, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, the new Falcon Drumline, and the Fitchbyrds Modern Jazz Band. Ensembles included Fitchburg State students, community members, faculty and staff.
