Biology and Chemistry Professor Dr. Erin Rehrig took students in her Life Science for Educators class around campus to identify each of the four major plant classifications; Nonvascular plants (mosses), Seedless vascular plants (ferns) Gymnosperms (pine), and Angiosperms (flowering plants). 

Students in Biology and Chemistry Professor Steven Fiedler's Physical Chemistry 1 Lab work on an experiment where they bring water to a boil at room temperature utilizing pressure in the Antonucci Science Complex. The course explores the underlying principles of chemistry from a physical chemistry standpoint. Topics of discussion include kinetic theory, theories of the structure of matter, theory of solutions, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, spectroscopy and kinetics.

Students in Biology and Chemistry Professor Billy Samulak's General Chemistry Lab work on an experiment in the Antonucci Science Complex. The course explores the fundamental laws and theories of chemistry such as atomic structure, the periodic table, electrochemistry, descriptive inorganic chemistry, the gas laws, solutions, equilibrium calculations and chemical bonding. Chemical calculations are emphasized. 

Professor Ronald Krieser's genetics lab used a fluoroscope to identify mitochondria within cells that they manipulated at the Antonucci Science Building. Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the interior of an object. Learn more about our Biology Programs here.

Nursing  students learn the methods of, and importance of wound care in their Nursing Foundations Lab. In this course, emphasis is placed on professionalism, caring, communication, cultural considerations, spirituality, sexuality and health promoting activities. 

Students in Biology and Chemistry Professor Billy Samulak's Chemistry for Health Science lab worked on an experiment in the Antonucci Science Complex. This course is designed specifically for nursing and exercise sports majors and will include a study of selected topics from general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. (This course will not fulfill the requirements of the biology major or healthy professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and physician assistant). 

The Biology, Chemistry, and Earth & Geographic Sciences departments held their annual science symposium yesterday afternoon at the Lisciotti pavilion in the Antonucci Science Building. This is an event where the science faculty, and students, present posters on their research to get students interested and involved in the sciences.

Two teams of senior nursing students worked through a community nursing scenario with a professional Social Worker as patient in our Nursing Simulation Lab. The Fitchburg State University Nursing Simulation Laboratory assists nursing students in learning critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in preparation for their healthcare careers. The “manikins”, or "actors" act as  patients. Fellow students watch as their classmates work through the simulation. All students and faculty debrief after the scenario.

Students in Dr. Christopher Cratsley's Life Science for Educators course work on an experiment in the Antonucci Science Complex. This course covers a broad array of life science topics including cellular, organismal, and human biology. It is designed to provide a foundation in the life sciences for education majors (K-8). The course includes a laboratory component designed to develop the students' understanding of the scientific method and provide some biology methodologies that will aid students in the development of lesson plans and classroom activities. An integrative approach is taken for some aspects of this course to establish connections to other sciences (earth science, chemistry, engineering).
