What to Expect When You're Expecting (College)

Behold, a picture.

College is cool and rad, and any other positive adjective you want to put in there.

This was taken on my first day here at Fitchburg State University. Looking back on it now, it’s funny how nervous I was before I got here.

Besides my awkward existence, It’s an intimidating thought to live away from home among people you’ve never met.  At first I was anxious about everything from making new friends to remembering how to walk through doors, but within moments of actually getting here that all dissolved… except for the door bit.

You’re not alone when you first come here, and everyone around you is sharing the same worries: what now?

Luckily, you’re in good, green and gold hands. Move in day begins with the completely unexpected: moving in. On the first day, freshmen have a presentation and are given orientation groups. Your groups assemble like a better-dressed but less powerful version of The Avengers, and your orientation leaders bring you to some part of campus to help break the ice. The OLs are down to earth and friendly people. I guarantee you, because this happens to everyone, that at least one person in that group will be one your best friends throughout your college years. It’s a weird phenomenon, like the Bermuda Triangle or double rainbows. Whether it’s the first day or a semester later, it happens, so keep an eye out.

Typically, the first two days before classes have activities lined up to help the freshmen assimilate to Fitchburg. Actually the first week of school is a breeze, and it’s a fun time to meet the flurry of new people around.

There are plenty of reasons for you to be excited right now.

-Accepted Students day is on March 28th, and all of you better be there. Why? Because last year there was a chocolate fountain, and chocolate fountains are so much better than a pat on the back.

-Communicating through the Schools App for Fitchburg is pretty awesome for getting out there and introducing yourself to your future class.

-Additionally, if you like walking using only your hands, check out the virtual tour! Or be proactive and Photoshop yourself into the pictures if you simply can’t wait to see yourself here in the fall.
