How long have you been teaching at Fitchburg State University?

I have been employed at Fitchburg State for four years. I currently teach in the master of science in counseling program for Graduate and Continuing Education.

What attracted you to teach at Fitchburg State?

The opportunity to teach both undergraduate and graduate students attracted me to teach at Fitchburg State. Given my background as a counselor, I truly enjoy teaching and supervising future counselors.

In 100 words or less, describe your program.

This program offers two specialty concentrations – Mental Health Counseling and School Guidance Counseling. Each concentration is designed to prepare students to meet the educational requirements to pursue Massachusetts licensure as either a Mental Health Counselor or School Guidance Counselor. In both concentrations students will complete coursework and supervised practica/internships to gain hands-on experience providing counseling services.

What career opportunities are available to students who complete your program?

Students in the School Counseling concentration typically work in public and private schools, while those in the Mental Health Counseling concentration often find employment in mental health agencies and hospitals.

Is there any advice that you normally provide to prospective students?

Make sure you’re passionate about helping others before making a decision to pursue graduate education in the counseling field. While it is rewarding work, it is emotionally-difficult work. Also, always be open to feedback. The most effective counselors continually hope to learn from others and never stop trying to grow.
