Thank you to guest blogger, Lee Anne Hooley, a recent graduate of the Applied Communication program.

"Marketing is a concept focused on reaching out to potentially engaged publics, with a goal of galvanizing audiences around a brand," says Dr. Kyle Moody who is teaching Social Marketing in Summer I from May 30 - June 30.Moody_-_Social_Media_Profile_-_November_2013-160x161.jpegAccording to Dr. Moody, this course offers students the opportunity to learn about integrating marketing concepts and campaigns with newer outputs such as social media, and producing high quality content for organizations or personal sites overseen by graduate students.

This course examines and covers:

  • Communication theory and practices, how those practices are integrated and illustrated in social media, and how it affects users and producers
  • Search engine optimatization
  • Workflow
  • Convergence
  • Production of culture
  • Conscientious posting
  • Coordination between networked audiences

You will apply the core skills and practices to user organizations as they relate to business and communicative contexts.

Don't take our word for it. Check out this testimonial from a recent class attendee:

“Dr. Moody’s Social Marketing course was essential to starting my career as a social media consultant.  I am now managing the social media marketing strategy for several Ohio based breweries using the tools taught in class; content management and planning, brand awareness, customer persona creation, and monitoring engagement via tools like HootSuite to improve marketing decisions and drive the business’ content.  I’ve even launched a successful blog documenting the Ohio brewery boom thanks to the skills learned in this class.”  ~ Amanda De Lavini

Dr. Charles Sides is teaching Persuasion in Context: Communications for Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations in Summer II from July 10 - August 11.Charles Sides.jpg

This course will expose students to theories, strategies and techniques of designing integrated marketing communications campaigns for advertising, and public relations professions.

Students will explore relevant communication theories of persuasion and past practices in professional persuasion contexts.  Based on their developing understanding, students will create an integrated marketing campaign for a product or service of their choosing.

Dr. Sides offers some insight on why this course is valuable to add to your toolkit.

“Virtually every organization from the smallest club to the largest corporation has a person, group, or division in charge of managing the public's perception of that organization. In small organizations, it might be a publicity chairperson who sends announcements of meetings to a local newspaper; in large corporations, it might be a marketing communications division that coordinates all aspects of the company's public affairs.”

Recent class attendees agree:

“I never realized how crucial persuasion was as a tool in the marketing and communication fields.  Professor Sides’ class had excellent reading and thoughtful assignments that taught me the many angles and situations to consider while building a successful marketing campaign.  We learned how to advertise using both classic media such as television and radio as well as how to utilize social media.  I was able to use the final project material at work while I was working on it -meaning I helped to design a campaign and see it in real time. It was an excellent experience.”

Consider taking one or both of these classes to help you learn to apply valuable skills to your communication plan.
