So you’ve decided you want to teach, perhaps this is a career change or this is a life-long dream finally coming true. No matter how you’ve come to realize this passion, you need to apply to a graduate program. In your research you’ve noticed certain institutions require a passing score on the MTEL Communication and Literacy exam for admission into their program.
Why does Fitchburg State require the MTEL prior to applying? What’s in it for you to take the testing now instead of later?
- MTEL scores never expire – get this off of your plate now as you’ll have enough on your plate once you’re enrolled in a graduate program. If you take a year to complete an application to graduate school, your test scores will still be valid.
- The Communication and Literacy: Reading and Writing subtests are required for every initial teaching license in Massachusetts. If you change your mind and decide you don’t want to teach Early Childhood Education, and you'd rather teach Middle School Math/Science you can take these scores with you in the new direction.
- You’ll get an idea of what’s involved in the MTEL process. Several teaching licenses including Elementary Education 1-6 and Special Education require a series of MTEL exams for licensure. Many times students find a learning curve with the MTEL exams. After completing these tests you’ll have a much better idea of how to prepare.
- Our NCATE accredited programs require a passing score on the Communication and Literacy MTEL for admission into an initial licensure program. You know a Fitchburg State education degree is prestigious, however, did you know it’s also nationally accredited?
- Boost your confidence. Wouldn’t it be nice to say, “Hey, I’ve passed part of my MTELs?" Wouldn’t you like to know that you have the academic ability to succeed in a graduate level education program? A passing score on the MTEL can give you a great idea of your potential success.
