It’s never too early to think about grad school

You’re just about finished with your junior year of college and you’re starting to think about your future, or maybe you're just about to graduate with your bachelor's degree. Where are you going to work? Is your resume up to date? What about graduate school? You've still got time, right? There's no need to rush. But it’s never too early to start thinking about graduate school.

  1. You might need prerequisites. Are you thinking about a career in Counseling, Teaching or Business? Are you looking to change your field of study from psychology to business for your master's degree? You might want to look at the required prerequisite courses. If you have room for electives or a minor in your program, get the prerequisites completed now while you’re still in school.
  1. Get a head start on the application requirements. Every graduate program will require different documentation and graduate testing for admission into their program. Thinking about graduate school early allows you extra time to prepare these documents. Worried about deadlines? Ask if the program you’re applying to has an application deadline or if they offer rolling admission like Fitchburg State.
  1. Take some time to shop around and find the right program. Just like when you found your undergraduate program, you need time to research programs. Attend graduate information sessions, keep a list of questions and compare notes on each program. The more time you have to compare notes, the more time you have to find the right fit for you.
  1. Prepare for the graduate testing you need. Do you need to take a GRE, Miller Analogies Test or MTEL for admission into your program? Test dates fill quickly for certain exams so find a test center near you, and register early. Visit our Graduate Testing FAQ website for helpful preparation links.

Fitchburg State’s Graduate and Continuing Education Office is open all summer. Make the most of your vacation and come in for an advising session, attend our next information session, or even register for prerequisites in one of our summer sessions!
