We've got a 3 credit graduate course that “forces” you to see five (5) plays and/or musicals in the greater Boston area.Theater9

Join us the first two weekends in August for Field Experiences in Theater Education at Fitchburg State! This year we will be seeing:

  1. Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin  at Emerson Cutler Majestic Theater - Sunday, August 2

Heralded as “the greatest songwriter that has ever lived,” by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin is known for innumerable American classics such as “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “Anything You Can Do,” and “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails.” Songwriter Jerome Kern said it all: “Irving Berlin…IS American music.” In this tour de force performance by award winning showman Hershey Felder (George Gershwin Alone and Maestro: Leonard Bernstein), the remarkable story of “America’s Composer” comes to life. We’re taken from the depths of anti-Semitism in Czarist Russia to New York’s Lower East Side—and ultimately all of America and the world. Featuring the composer’s most popular and enduring songs and beyond, Hershey Felder’s masterful creation of character and musical performance makes this evening with Irving Berlin an unforgettable journey that epitomizes the American dream.

  2. Kinky Boots  at Boston Opera House  - August 6-9

Charlie Price has suddenly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in Lola. A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible.

  3. Colossal   by Company One Theatre at Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA - July 17 - August 15

The beauty and brutality of football seduce Mike to stray from the path his father had mapped out for him, but when a standard play goes catastrophically wrong, Mike has to tackle the past and make peace with the man he dreamed he would be. Played in four quarters with a half time show, dance company, and a drumline - Colossal's explosive theatrical storytelling and full-contact physicality carries this unmissable summer event all the way to the end zone.

  4. Thoroughly Modern Millie by Boston Children's Theatre at Shore Country Day School - August 6

Featuring students from BCT's pre-professional Summer Studios 4 program, the high-octane musical Thoroughly Modern Millie is the story of a small-town girl who follows her dreams to the big city, where she finds romance, adventure, and above all, fun. The show will have audiences dancing in the aisles!
